In 2013 I was fortunate to start an exciting new adventure in life. I moved to Siem Reap, Cambodia, to start up a design agency where our profits would go to an NGO that we collaborated with. We would hire local talents and work towards the vast tourism sector in the region. Millions of people come every year to explore Angkor Wat and the surrounding cultural sites. I thoroughly enjoyed this experience and I am still involved with the NGO itself.
Bridge of Life
The NGO we cooperated with is called Bridge of Life and they provide free educational and community based projects in the Cambodian countryside. They do great work and I still help out by aiding on the social business side.
Bridge of Life’s team in Siem Reap is incredibly ingenious and we often discuss various new social business that can benefit the organisation. One of these concepts were Lavender Jeep tours which is an initiative to empower local women. The company is led by women entrepreneurs and unique in that it is the only tour company in Siem Reap structured as a cooperative. The staff are shareholders in our tours, earning 30% of profits from their trip. The remaining profits are donated to Bridge of Life School, funding educational programming for the next generation of Cambodians.
Action Pour Les Enfants [APLE] is an international NGO, based in Phnom Penh. Initially, APLE assisted the police with investigations into street-based child sexual abuse and exploitation and provided pro-bono legal support to victims and their families. We at Co-op design helped them to develop their new brand and visual style.
